Assolo #2

ANDREA BARZAGHI

Francesca Antonini Arte Contemporanea is pleased to present the second episode of the Assolo cycle, which features Andrea Barzaghi (Monza, 1988), in collaboration with Lunetta11, Mombarcaro (CN).

With Assolo, the gallery presents every six months a project dedicated to a guest artist to whom the central room is assigned, where he can freely intervene with an accurate selection of new works. In June 2021 was featured the work of Chinese painter Shafei Xia (ShaoXing, 1989), in collaboration with Lunetta11, Mombarcaro (CN) and P420, Bologna.

In Barzaghi’s research, the man represents the one and only starting point, not to be understood as a separate entity from its context but as an inhabitant of a universe where he lives, reflects and moves. For the artist, “the human issue, intended as a set of relations between opposing units, between individual and society, interiority and exteriority, has always been a large source of inspiration”. His work then merges into an investigation that is expressed in form of narrations, which in turn give life to a new imaginary. The pictorial language is not only a medium, but a specific way to relate to art: the act of painting, hiding behind a technical action, contains an intellectual activity that flows on the surface of canvases, crystalizing questions and reflections. Rich in references to the major archetypes of art history, Barzaghi’s works refer to diagrammatic painting, almost reduced to the essential, where the brush moves rather discharged and snappy. The result is a constant recall to the principles of representation and iconographic themes themselves.

For Assolo #2 Andrea Barzaghi realized two new large format canvases which embrace the central room walls. Among the different elements portrayed in both paintings, which are packed with references to the natural world, it is possible to see some floating figures who don’t predominate on the scene, but rather silently insert themselves into it.

Andrea Barzaghi (Monza, 1988) lives and works in Milan. Barzaghi attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Urbino and at the Akademie Der Bildenden Künste in Nuremberg. Among his recent solo and group shows: Pietre Volanti, Lunetta11, Mombarcaro, 2021; Milano-Torino (ritorno), Société Interludio, 2021; Milano-Torino (andata), Redazione Forme uniche, Milan, 2019; Abitiamo il mondo, Lunetta 11, Mombarcaro, 2020; Through Unfamiliar, Tbilisi History Museum, Tbilisi, 2019; Upandown, Potencja, Krakow, 2019; Vie di Fuga, Société Interludio, Turin, 2019; Superstimulus, a&o Kunsthalle, Leipzig, 2019; Dozen, Rosenbaum Contemporary, Boca Raton, 2018; Raid_Manumisson Motel, San Lazzaro di Savena, 2018; Malerei!
