The people who walk slowly

Francesca Antonini Arte Contemporanea is pleased to present The people who walk slowly, a solo show by Alessandra Giovannoni (Rome, 1954) that includes a selection of paintings dedicated to urban views of Rome.

25 years from the artist’s first exhibition in the gallery, the exhibition project ideally begins with a painting dated 2000 which depicts a corner of via Nizza, which has inspired a group of new paintings made from 2013 to 2016.

In a path that develops from the lungotevere to piazza Fiume, passing through Castel Sant’Angelo and via Salaria, the quality of Alessandra Giovannoni’s painting manifests itself once again in a series of bright visions of a suspended city, in which the buildings are organized in mighty solids that are background to the silent presence of human figures.

The works on display, all of large format, are the result of annotations and visual notes that the artist registers while crossing the city, places near to her, in different times.

“To feel one of my places i must see at everyday, at all times, from the same point of view. Same bench, same beach, same distance from objects or people”, writes the artist, outlining a process that feeds itself with the constant observation of reality, able to distill it in highly synthetic and poetical images.

Light and shadow to build the volumes, black and white to give the objects plastic evidence, combined into a procedure that inserts itself in the path of the great pictiorial tradition of the twentieth century, while still looking at the plasticity of sculpture.

The exhibition is also presented with a pubblication that includes, in addition to images of the artworks, an unreleased short story by Elena Stancanelli, inspired by Alessandra Giovannoni’s paintings.
